Launching Regulations
With effect from 7th June 2020, the Umhlanga Ski Boat Club was given permission to open the launch at Grannies Pool provided that strict Covid-19 protocols were adhered to. The USBC Committee are enforcing the following necessary precautions and have implemented the following procedures to ensure the safety of the public and all those launching boats at the designated launch site.
Itʼs very important that you take note of the following safety measures and launch times to ensures your safety. Please complete the launch register, every time, before you launch and after you return. Remember to call VHF ch.10 for radio check. Permission to launch must be requested and granted before proceeding to sea and before beaching on return. For more information, see below. Below you can see when you can launch during the days. There is no launching in the evenings.
Weekdays:
- When lifeguards are on duty (6am-6pm Summer & 7am-5pm Winter)
- The launch register is to be filled out prior to launching.
- There are 4 launches available for Jet Skis and 4 launches available to Ski Boats these are on a first come first serve basis. 1Hr after sun rise any available launches may be used by either vessels.
- It is the skippers duty to clear Grannies Pool of all bathers prior to launching.
- No boat may beach without permission from the lifeguards. Should they be off duty, extreme caution should be exercised.
- 3 circles on the backline or a red flag held in the upright position to indicate your request for permission to beach. If your request is approved, the lifeguards will hold up a red and yellow flag in a vertical/upright position. Should permission not be granted, the flags will be held horizontally. Under NO circumstances may a boat beach until the flag is in the vertical/upright position
- After a period of time, should there be no response from the lifeguards, phone the beach office on 031 561 2764 for permission.
- Complete launch register on return

Weekends/ public holidays:
- When club duty officer is on duty
- The launch register is to be filled out prior to launching.
- It is the skippers duty to clear Grannies Pool of all bathers prior to launching.
- Boats may launch and beach at any time from first light up until 9am and then again after 2pm. Between 9am and 2pm boats may only launch and beach on the hour, with a ten minute window on either side to allow for traffic. This rule applies during weekends, school holidays and public holidays.
- NO boat may be brought in after ten past the hour or before ten to the hour unless in emergencies that have been authorised by the lifeguards.
- No boat may beach without permission from the duty officer
- Should the duty officer be off duty or should the radio not be working, get permission from the lifeguards, Ie. 3 circles on the backline or a red flag held in the upright position to indicate your request for permission from the lifeguards to beach. Under NO circumstances may a boat beach until the flag is in the vertical/upright position. Should there be no response from the lifeguards, phone the beach office on 031 561 2764 for permission. Should they be off duty, extreme caution should be exercised.
- Complete launch register on return
